that eight inches of snow in new york city. take a look at the snowfall totals we've got on the boards for you this morning. with some places in connecticut coming in about 34 inches of snow. st. james, new york, almost 30 inches of snow. boston right now -- remember, this is a blowing, blowing, driving snow. it's been very difficult to measure. in the entire overnight event of this storm, with 50-mile-per-hour, 60-mile-per-hour winds. we have boston at a preliminary number of about 18 inches. ginger's been out measuring that this morning. and new york city, because it's almost impossible, everything's in drifts and everything was blowing around. eight to ten inches of snow there. quick look at the radar. we'll show you what's happening right now. you can see the heavier line of snow is pulling away from the new york city area. you have the snow from long island, connecticut, rhode island, on into boston area and into maine, as well. we believe there will be acc accumulations there. at one time, we were getting five to six inches per hour in connecticut. with a blinding, driving

happening right now. you can see the heavier line of snow is pulling away from the new york city area. you have the snow from long island, connecticut, rhode island, on into boston area and on into maine, as well. we believe there will be accumulations there. snowfall totals, at one point, we were getting five to six inches per hour in connecticut. with a blinding, driving wind of almost hurricane-force. you have five inches of snow coming in the boston area. we believe you could have five to eight in that area, depending on how light and fluffy that snow continues to be during the day today. how about a wind forecast? from this storm, 83-mile-per-hour winds in martha's vineyard. that's more than hurricane-force winds in martha's vineyard during the event of this snowstorm. connecticut, 76-mile-per-hour winds to 82-mile-per-hour winds. boston 76-mile-per-hour winds. long island, 60-mile-per-hour winds. in long island, we have reports of hundreds of cars, stranded. we have the l.i.e. shut down. we have the southern state parkway shut down. people were out in the storm and got trapped. their

and plummeted to the ground in the city of luxor. people tried to jump for their lives. egyptian officials said at least 20 tourists were flying over luxor, when the balloon caught fire and plunged to the ground. christopher michelle is an american photographer. he was in another hot air balloon, close to the one that crashed. >> this is a popular tourist thing to do in luxor, which is to float over the ancient temples. there are eight or nine balloons. they do it almost every day. it's a fairly common activity. as we were coming in to land, i heard a loud explosion. saw smoke. i didn't realize it was another balloon. we were close to the ground. as you probably know, in the luxor, they burn the sugar cane. i assumed it was coming from the ground, not obviously one of the balloons. >> reporter: michelle said he couldn't see the other balloon until after his had landed safely. >> emergency vehicles started to arrive. over in next hour or two, we started to understand the extent of the tragedy. >> reporter: another woman described the scene to the bbc. >> it exploded in the air. an

, for this one. it's the worst that it can deliver. anywhere from newark to new york city, all the way through hartford and connecticut, to boston, massachusetts, up to portland, maine. this entire area is going to get the driving, blinding snow, the snow that shuts down cities. this is kind of a big hit for this area. it really comes together with two storms. one storm that's delivered a hit of snow. north of the chicagoland area, about ten inches of snow. you didn't have to get too far to get that snow there. and in central detroit. not detroit, but central michigan. they picked up about ten inches of snow. as that system drives up to the north, they get together and phase right about 2:00, 3:00 in the morning, that system will pull itself together to become one, big snowmaker off the coast of new york and connecticut and massachusetts and boston, to make that big, big storm happen. who gets what? if you're south of the center of the storm you get rain. right along the coastal areas, where you see the flashing red, we have a hurricane-force wind warning out there. the coastal areas t

winter, on track for the northeast. could it be a lot of snow headed for some major cities? guess who we're going to ask. sa sam. >> models started to show this last night. we've had a split flow in the jet stream. we've had a northern jet and a southern jet. this has been small nuisancemakers and storms. but what begins to happen is those two positions start to phase together. let me get back to the graphic. i want to show you -- max, will you run that through. to the eastern side. here's what happens. these two lows that are right now, really far apart, get really close in sync and phase off the eastern seaboard. where this happens depends who gets snow and who gets rain. it's going to happen from the carolinas towards probably boston. wherever this happens, there's a lot of snow with this storm and southern rain. there will be mixing, as well. as far as exact totals, we're not going to do that tonight into tomorrow. buffalo, albany, 6 to 12-inch snowfalls. new york, 3 to 6 for that area. philly, a little less. 1 to 3. boston, 12 to 24 inches of snow. some places in maine, two f

the daring fbi raid on the underground bunker. gio benitez is in midland city, alabama. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning, george. these details are riveting. we were shocked to learn that just feet away from us, from all of the reporters, law enforcement officers were training to take out their suspect. abc news has learned bomb technicians have found two homemade explosives where the little boy named ethan was being held. one inside this homemade bunker. another inside this white ventilation pipe negotiators were using to communicate with hostage taker, jimmy lee dykes. new photos show the entrance to the makeshift underground cell. sources say this is where the raid went down monday, after negotiators convinced dykes to approach the bunker hatch around 3:00 p.m. police knew he was armed. but sources now say dykes had also fortified the door. fbi agents quickly set off an explosion. and a firefight began. abc news has learned, dykes fired on the agents first. they fired back. moments later, dykes was dead and little ethan was rushed from the bunker. >> in split-seconds,
